(BUSINESS WIRE)-- As part of the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications’ FY 2019 project "Research on Smart City Model for Solving Social Problems in Malaysia", based on the smart city initiatives which has been started with the City of Las Vegas, United States, NTT Group (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (Hereinafter, NTT), NTT Communications Corporation, NTT Ltd., InfoCom Research, Inc., NTT DATA Corporation, NTT COMWARE Corporation) will conduct Asia's one of the first Smart City Proof of Concept (PoC) in the Cyberjaya area of Malaysia from February 2020, in cooperation with local stakeholders. Through this PoC, NTT Group aims to establish a sustainable business model while verifying the possibility of solving social issues in Asia, utilizing the technologies and know-how accumulated in the smart city field in the United States.

1. Background

In Asian countries where stable economic growth continues, various social issues associated with economic growth such as traffic jams and environmental problems have become apparent, and the expectations for ICT-based solutions to these issues are growing. Among Asian countries, Malaysia, a country that built up friendly and mutually beneficial bilateral relationship with Japan through the (Look East) policy advocated by the Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad in 1981, is no exception. There are high expectations that Japanese companies will utilize technologies and know-how cultivated globally, to contribute to the resolution of social issues and the economic development of Malaysia.

Cyberjaya is a neighboring city of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, and has attracted many ICT companies as the nucleus of the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) which has been proposed during the administration of the 4th Prime Minister, Mahathir bin Mohamad (1990 - 1995). In addition, the 5G network, which was put into trial operation with nation’s first OpenLab being hosted there, has positioned Cyberjaya as a pioneer test area for the smart city concept in Malaysia.
Since the establishment of a group company (NTT MSC Sdn Bhd) in 1997, NTT Group has been active with investments and business development to contribute to the technological development of the country, and has built a strong relationship with local stakeholders over many years. Panasonic Develops High-Power Blue WBC Technology to Revolutionize DDL Applications on Microfabrication

This technology enables high-power, short WL laser for microfabrication at a high beam quality

OSAKA, Japan-Thursday 30 January 2020 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- On January 29, 2020, Panasonic Corporation announced it has succeeded in demonstrating the world's highest brightness blue laser. This has been achieved by using the wavelength beam combining (WBC) technology [1] on a direct diode laser (DDL) to produce a high quality output beam [2]. With this technology, power scaling is enabled while maintaining the beam quality by simply increasing the number of laser sources. This demonstration opens the door to laser intensities that could be two orders of magnitude higher than conventional blue laser systems. This technology will contribute to the emerging microfabrication processes, whose demand is expected to grow in industrial applications, such as in the automotive industry.

The automotive industry is moving towards “electrification” and “miniaturization” while requiring “high rigidity,” “design flexibility” and “productivity.” Against this background, the anticipation for the microfabrication lasers that can process various kinds of materials such as copper, gold and plastic is building up. Especially, blue laser with a high optical absorption efficiency has a high demand in the field of copper fabrication for the automotive motors and batteries. Highly-productive processing requires a laser beam source that has both high output power and high beam quality.

In order to attain such a beam source, Panasonic started collaboration with TeraDiode, Inc. (TDI), a Massachusetts, U.S.-based company, in 2013, and since has been developing WBC technology which can combine multiple and different wavelengths into one combined beam. In 2014, Panasonic released LAPRISS; the world’s first laser welding robot system equipped with an infrared DDL using WBC technology*1. In 2017, the company acquired TDI as a wholly owned subsidiary*2 and started developing on the output-power optimization on WBC as well as shortening the wavelength.

The output power optimization of the high-beam-quality blue laser (wavelength band = 400 – 450nm) was realized by combining more than 100 emitters from multiple diode bars [3] with WBC technology.

This WBC technology combines the beams from multiple emitters at different wavelengths that are incident on the diffraction grating at angles corresponding to each wavelength. The resonator is then formed in between the shared partially-transparent mirror and each edge face of the emitters. As a result, the output beam has achieved a output of 135 W with a high beam quality of BPP [4] 1.5mm・mrad.

Going forward, Panasonic will develop a processing system that is equipped with this laser beam source, as well as the process optimization in laser processing.

Panasonic will hold exhibits and lecture sessions on our technical achievement at PHOTONICS WEST 2020 in San Francisco from February 1 to 6, 2020.*3

A part of this research and development includes the data obtained from a project – “Development of advanced laser processing with intelligence based on high-brightness and high-efficiency laser technologies (TACMI project)” – commissioned by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) of Japan.

[Applications] Laser processing (welding, cutting, etc.)

[Patents] Total of 571 patents both domestic and international (including pending applications)

Glossary
[1] Wavelength Beam Combining (WBC) technology: The technology that combines the beams with different wavelengths that are emitted from the multiple DDLs (direct diode lasers) on a diffraction grating.

[2] Beam quality: An index indicates how easy it is to combine the beam. Higher beam quality has smaller diameter and highly collimate feature.

[3] Diode bar: A laser bar that has multiple emittance stripes (emitters) in an array configuration on a single semiconductor chip.

[4] BPP (Beam Parameter Products): This is defined as the product of the radius r0 of the beam waist at the focusing position multiplied by the half-value half-width θ of the beam divergence angle; BPP = r0xθ. The unit is expressed in [mm・mrad]. The smaller BPP is, the higher the beam quality becomes.

Philip Morris International Inc. Announces Agreement with KT&G to Accelerate the Achievement of a Smoke-Free Future

by offering adult smokers a broader choice of smoke-free alternatives to cigarettes

LAUSANNE, Switzerland-Wednesday 29 January 2020 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Philip Morris International Inc. (PMI) (NYSE:PM) today announces a global collaboration agreement with the leading tobacco and nicotine company in South Korea, KT&G, to commercialize KT&G’s smoke-free products outside of the country.

“To achieve PMI’s vision of a smoke-free future we must grow the smoke-free category worldwide which requires multiple players providing a wide array of better choices for adult smokers. While IQOS continues to be the leading product in the smoke-free category, and we plan to broaden our portfolio by launching IQOS MESH in the coming months, we believe that increased collaboration will benefit adult smokers by providing greater choice and drive accelerated adoption of smoke-free products worldwide,” said André Calantzopoulos, PMI’s Chief Executive Officer.

“Our objective is that all adult smokers who would otherwise continue to smoke switch as soon as possible to better alternatives and abandon cigarettes to the benefit of their health, public health and society at large. Further to our ongoing efforts to develop, assess, and commercialize our pipeline of science-based smoke-free alternatives to cigarettes, we are always open to collaboration with third parties on products that complement our already strong portfolio and that we can further enhance. We are delighted that KT&G has chosen PMI to expand the sales of its smoke-free products outside of South Korea. We look forward to working together to provide adult smokers around the world more options to leave cigarettes behind, by offering a portfolio that provides them an ever-broader range of taste, price, and technology choices.”

The agreement will run for an initial period of three years. The two companies plan for global collaboration with the intention to actively expand to cover many markets, based on commercial success. The agreement allows PMI to distribute current KT&G smoke-free products, and their evolutions, on an exclusive basis, and does not restrict PMI from distributing its own or third-party products. KT&G’s smoke-free products include heat-not-burn tobacco systems (e.g., Lil Mini and Lil Plus), hybrid technologies that combine heat-not-burn tobacco and e-vapor technologies (e.g., Lil Hybrid), and e-vapor products (e.g., Lil Vapor).

Products sold under the agreement will be subject to careful assessment to ensure they meet the regulatory requirements in the markets where they are launched, as well as PMI’s high standards of quality and scientific substantiation of their harm reduction potential. PMI and KT&G will seek any necessary regulatory approvals that may be required on a market-by-market basis.

“We are excited to enter into this agreement with KT&G,” added Mr. Calantzopoulos. “We are able to bring PMI’s resources, knowledge and infrastructure as we launch KT&G’s smoke-free products outside South Korea. Products sold under this agreement will give consumers across multiple international markets access to KT&G's smoke free products for the first time; accelerating the achievement of PMI's vision of a smoke-free future while enabling KT&G to benefit from PMI's technical, scientific and international expertise in helping adult smokers switch to better alternatives.”

PMI will be responsible for the commercialization of smoke-free products supplied under the agreement. The agreement does not pertain to the South Korean market or combustible products. There are no current plans to commercialize KT&G products in the U.S.

Philip Morris International: Delivering a Smoke-Free Future

Philip Morris International (PMI) is leading a transformation in the tobacco industry to create a smoke-free future and ultimately replace cigarettes with smoke-free products to the benefit of adults who would otherwise continue to smoke, society, the company and its shareholders. PMI is a leading international tobacco company engaged in the manufacture and sale of cigarettes, as well as smoke-free products and associated electronic devices and accessories, and other nicotine-containing products in markets outside the United States. In addition, PMI ships a version of its IQOS Platform 1 device and its consumables authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to Altria Group, Inc. for sale in the United States under license. PMI is building a future on a new category of smoke-free products that, while not risk-free, are a much better choice than continuing to smoke. Through multidisciplinary capabilities in product development, state-of-the-art facilities and scientific substantiation, PMI aims to ensure that its smoke-free products meet adult consumer preferences and rigorous regulatory requirements. PMI's smoke-free IQOS product portfolio includes heat-not-burn and nicotine-containing vapor products. As of September 30, 2019, PMI estimates that approximately 8.8 million adult smokers around the world have already stopped smoking and switched to PMI's heat-not-burn product, available for sale in 51 markets in key cities or nationwide under the IQOS brand. SD & microSD Memory Cards - the World’s First Choice in Memory Cards - 20 Years of Innovation

SD Association launched January 2000 to lead the industry

SAN RAMON, Calif.-Thursday 23 January 2020 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- The SD Association (SDA) is celebrating its 20th Anniversary after launching 20 years ago with a mission to reinvent the memory card and make life easier for consumers and businesses everywhere. Throughout the years, SD memory cards evolved, expanded capabilities and became the number one card of choice. Today, these cards play a critical role in a variety of devices and uses unimagined 20 years ago.

The trusted family of SD memory cards give consumers and business users a choice, increase the usefulness, value and longevity of numerous consumer electronics by offering unprecedented portability, upgradeability and interoperability. SD memory cards have become the de facto storage device for billions of products in this mobility era when more storage is required. By 2023 and beyond, enterprises, machines, industries, consumers, science, and more will be generating 103 zettabytes per year, according to IDC. Data generated by consumers and businesses, whether it is from smartphones, tablets, laptops, drones, surveillance cameras, or automobiles, rely on SD memory cards to keep their music, movies, TV shows, games and photos safe and always accessible.

Twenty years ago, the memory card marketplace was a confusing mix of about a half-dozen, mostly proprietary card options incompatible with each other and lacked interoperability across different devices. SD was created to become a technology standard to meet growing consumer electronic demand and continue to foster a robust ecosystem for collaborations and growth among all device manufacturers. The founders of the SDA were Matsushita, now Panasonic, SanDisk Corporation, now owned by Western Digital, and Toshiba Corporation, whose memory division was spun off as KIOXIA Corporation.

“When the SD Association was launched 20 years ago, the three founding companies were truly visionary when they saw how the amazingly small SD memory card could make a significant impact on the way we store digital data in the 21st century – ultimately creating a de facto standard for the next generation of digital media,” said Yosi Pinto, SD Association Chairman. “The SD specifications have not only driven the standardization of memory cards for the benefit of the consumers but have also continued to evolve and expand capabilities to meet industry demands, positioning SD as the most recognized and trusted brand for removable storage.”

Highlights of the last 20 years of SDA innovations include (see infographic):

Created 15 major physical and mechanical specifications and dozens of associated publications, related addendums, test guidelines and application specifications
Designed the specification of the minuscule form factor microSD, now the most popular memory card trusted by both businesses and consumers
Supersized card capacities with SDHC, SDXC, and SDUC specifications that reach up to 128 terabytes
Boosted card speeds nearly 100 times from 12 MB/sec to 985 MB/sec with the latest SD Express specification
Maintained backward compatibility support with plug-and-play convenience
Accumulated 1,700+ members focused on creating and using SD standards
The first SD card sold 20 years ago provided just 8 megabytes of storage capacity. Thanks to the huge advances in memory technology, today SDXC or microSDXC cards are available at 1 terabyte, a ~125,000 times capacity increase over the first SD memory cards.

“By creating SD technology, the SDA helped established a standard to further commercial and consumer businesses into a robust ecosystem that continues to grow,” said Hiroyuki Sakamoto, president of the SD Association. “With the recent SD Express, microSD Express, and SDUC standards, the SDA has developed a roadmap that will serve everyone for years to come.”

The SDA has unmatched expertise in memory card standardization for consumer and business applications. It has robust technical specification development processes and test guidelines backed with compliance activities to test new products for interoperability and conformance to specifications. Plus, its global marketing and communication teams standardize and manage the usage of its trademarks logos and symbols, educate users and promote the adoption, advancement and use of SD standards.

SD Association

The SD Association is a global ecosystem of nearly 850 technology companies charged with setting interoperable SD standards. The Association encourages the development of consumer electronics, wireless communication, digital imaging and networking products that utilize market-leading SD technology. The SD standard is the number one choice for consumers and has earned more than 90 percent of the memory card market with its reliable interoperability and its easy-to-use format. Today, smartphones, tablets, drones, IoT devices, HDTVs, audio players, automotive systems, computers, digital cameras and digital video cameras feature SD interoperability. LONDON & DAKAR, Senegal-Monday 27 January 2020 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Leading online money transfer company WorldRemit has joined forces with Wizall Money to launch its first mobile money transfer service to Senegal.

WorldRemit saves the Senegalese community living abroad time and money as they do not have to visit a traditional money transfer agent and pay expensive fees to send money home. Instead, using the WorldRemit app or website, they can send funds online 24/7.

The new partnership with Wizall Money enables WorldRemit customers in over 50 countries, including France, Spain and the USA, to send money home instantly to over 60 000 mobile money accounts in Senegal. Estimates suggest that the Senegalese diaspora community is almost 560,000-people strong, and the money they send home makes a huge difference to the lives of thousands of families. Senegal is estimated to have received almost $2.5bn in remittances in 2019, accounting for 10% of the country’s GDP.

“According to the World Bank, nearly 60% of adults in Senegal remain unbanked. Our new service will enable families across urban and rural areas of the country to receive money from abroad straight to their mobile phone, without the need for an internet connection or bank account.”

They don’t have to wait hours in the agency anymore because the transfer is made instantly in the wallet. About Wizall

In response to the growing needs for banking services and access to local financial services, the innovative vision of Wizall Money first seduced the Total Group, leader in the distribution of petroleum products, marked by the acquisition of equity interests in the start-up and an investment of several billion FCFA on the solution in 2015.

Wizall Money then launched a fundraiser with the Banque Centrale Populaire (BCP) group, owner of Banque Atlantique establishments, which in December 2018 became its main shareholder following a majority stake in the capital of the start-up.

Wizall Money has already reached major success in Senegal with 100,000 transfers per month, 60,000 customer accounts, 3 billion CFA monthly in circulation on the platform. Zayed Sustainability Prize Opens Submissions for 2021 Edition

Global organisations and high schools invited to submit entries before May 21 deadline

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates-Monday 27 January 2020 [ AETOS Wire ]

Following the recent celebration of the 10 winners of the 2020 awards during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, the Zayed Sustainability Prize has officially announced that its submissions process for the 2021 edition is now open.

Accepting entries from today until May 21st, 2020, via its online portal, the UAE’s pioneering global award for rewarding impact, innovation, and inspiration – across five sustainability categories – saw a record-breaking number of submissions last year, with 2,373 entries received from 129 countries.

H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of State and Director General of the Zayed Sustainability Prize, said: “With a 12-year record of recognizing and rewarding excellent solutions, we are confident the Prize will continue to attract more of the world’s most dedicated innovators to submit their entries, in support of resolving the world’s most pressing sustainability challenges.”

“Inspired by Sheikh Zayed’s legacy of commitment to global sustainability and humanitarianism, the Prize aligns with the emphasis our leadership has given this year to planning, preparing and finding solutions for the next 50 years.”

Now entering its 13th submissions cycle, the Prize already rewarded a total of 86 winners whose solutions or school projects have, directly and indirectly, positively transformed the lives of 335 million people, around the world.

The Prize’s US$3 million annual fund rewards winners US$600,000 in each category; the Global High Schools category is split into six world region winners, with each school able to claim up to US$100,000 to start or augment their project in their local communities. The Global High Schools category was introduced in 2012, in recognition that to empower and enhance communities of the future, the next generation of sustainability leaders need to be engaged at the school level – today.

While the scope of submissions vary, core elements of each entry lie in the innovative ways in which technology, applications and solutions are driving positive transformation of people’s lives. For the Health, Food, Energy, and Water categories, organisations should demonstrate that they are improving access to essential products or services with a long-term vision for improved living and working conditions. Many technological-based solutions often integrate with impactful long-term programmes and mechanisms like practical skills training, social entrepreneurialism, and gender empowerment.

The Zayed Sustainability Prize has a three-stage evaluation process, beginning with the due diligence conducted by an independent research and analysis consultancy. This identifies the qualified entries and results in the selection of shortlisted candidates. Evaluations are then undertaken by a Selection Committee consisting of category-specific panels of independent international experts. From this shortlist of candidates, finalists are chosen and then sent to the Prize Jury who select the winners, across all five categories.

The evaluation for the Health, Food, Energy and Water categories focus on three core criteria: Impact, Innovation, and Inspiration.

For ‘Impact’, submissions must demonstrate improved quality of human lives in a social, economic, technological, infrastructural, or environmental capacity. For ‘Innovation’, candidates should show a clear and unique value proposition, be disruptive or transformative, technically and commercially viable, and have been adopted in at least one market.

The ‘Inspiration’ criterion requires organisations to demonstrate shared values with Sheikh Zayed’s sustainability approach, have the potential to influence behaviour and actions in the wider community, and encourage others to develop complementary solutions for advancing sustainable and human development.

For the Global High Schools category, projects should be designed to be student–led, with emphasis placed on the students active involvement in planning, implementation, and monitoring processes. Projects should demonstrate innovative approaches that will also be impactful and inspirational to others. The six world regions of the Global High Schools category are: The Americas, Sub-Saharan Africa, MENA, Europe & Central Asia, South Asia, and East Asia & Pacific.

Winners of the 2021 Prize  will be announced at the annual awards ceremony held during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, in January 2021.
