AHF Partners with Lesotho’s Queen Masenate in Effort to Keep Girls in School

MASERU, LESOTHO-Tuesday, February 28th 2017 [ ME NewsWire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, in partnership with Her Majesty Queen Masenate Mohato Seeiso of Lesotho, hosted a special event intended to help keep girls in school, reduce their vulnerability to HIV infections and build their self-esteem.

The event, which is a joint initiative of the Queen’s Hlokomela Banana (Care for Girls) project and AHF’s GIRLS ACT campaign supported young women and girls drawn from various schools and an orphanage with the provision of free sanitary pads and school supplies. This initiative was largely informed by the compelling fact that one in ten girls in Sub-Saharan Africa misses school as a result of their menstruation cycle, which equals twenty percent of a given school year.

“Globally girls continue to miss school once their menstruation starts, due to lack of facilities, lack of information or lack of personal sanitary products in the schools. Unfortunately, the ripple effect of this is that being away from school makes them potentially more susceptible to HIV infection. In addition, away from schooling, they lose the opportunity of being empowered through education for a better future,” said Mapaballo Mile, Country Program Manager, AHF Lesotho. “This is the motive behind this formidable partnership with the Queen: to ensure that girls receive free monthly supplies of sanitary pads, school items and menstrual hygiene management and HIV prevention education.”

AHF launched it’s GIRLS ACT campaign in 2016 to ensure that young women and girls aged 15-24 are reached with a wide range of services, including but not limited to sexual reproductive health, menstrual hygiene management, HIV/STI, and legal aid for victims of gender based violence. AHF continues to exemplify its commitment towards supporting and uplifting girls through this kind of initiative, to ensure they have better health outcomes and make informed choices.

“Beyond these initiatives, we would strongly encourage stakeholders and governments to support accessibility to sanitary pads by removing tax levies which makes them unaffordable for most girls in rural areas and commit to making them available in schools at no cost,” stressed Larissa Klazinga, Regional Policy and Advocacy Manager, AHF Southern Africa. “We must also ensure that menstrual hygiene management becomes an integral part of school curriculum, by so doing, we empower girls to feel comfortable about their bodies and boost their confidence!”

The initiative is set to hit more cities and communities in Lesotho in the coming months.

Number of Global Mobile Subscribers to Surpass Five Billion This Year, Finds New GSMA Study

Mobile Ecosystem Accounted for 4.4 Per Cent of Global GDP in 2016

BARCELONA, Spain-Tuesday, February 28th 2017 [ ME NewsWire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The number of unique mobile subscribers around the world will surpass 5 billion later this year, according to a new GSMA study. The 2017 global edition of the GSMA’s ‘Mobile Economy’ report reveals that the 5 billion-subscriber milestone will be achieved by mid-year 2017 and will increase to 5.7 billion by the end of the decade. By that point, almost three-quarters of the world’s population will be subscribed to a mobile service. Subscriber growth over this period will be driven primarily by large Asia markets such as India, which alone is forecast to add 310 million new unique subscribers by 2020.

The study also highlights the on-going shift to mobile broadband networks and smartphones, paving the way towards the 5G era, and the mobile industry’s growing contribution to the global economy, jobs and social development.

“Mobile is a global platform that today supports two-thirds of the world’s population, delivering the connectivity and infrastructure that is powering new digital economies and addressing socioeconomic challenges,” said Mats Granryd, Director General of the GSMA. “Our latest Mobile Economy report reveals how the near ubiquity of smartphones and high-speed connectivity is enabling innovation in areas such as artificial intelligence and driving the digital transformation. Mobile operators have invested over a trillion dollars in their networks since 2010 and will invest a further $700 billion over the remainder of the decade as we enter the 5G era.”

4G Expands Across The Globe – 5G Set To Launch

By the end of 2016 there were 4.8 billion unique mobile subscribers and 7.9 billion SIM connections worldwide1. More than half of connections (55 per cent) were running on mobile broadband (3G/4G) networks, which are forecast to account for almost three-quarters of connections by 2020. The proportion of 4G connections alone is forecast to almost double from 23 per cent to 41 per cent by the end of the decade, a result of ongoing investments in 4G networks by operators. At the end of 2016, 580 4G (LTE) networks had been launched across 188 countries, providing 4G coverage to approximately 60 per cent of the global population.

Looking further ahead, the study predicts that the first commercial 5G networks (based on LTE Release 15) will launch in 2019 and will provide coverage to a third of the world’s population by 2025. The number of 5G connections is forecast to reach 1.1 billion by that time.

Supporting Economic Growth – And Delivering the Global Goals

It is calculated that mobile technologies and services accounted for 4.4 per cent of global GDP in 2016, equivalent to around $3.3 trillion of economic value2. This is forecast to increase to more than $4.2 trillion by 2020, or 4.9 per cent of projected global GDP, as countries around the world continue to benefit from the improvements in productivity and efficiency made possible by mobile technology. The mobile ecosystem directly and indirectly supported 28.5 million jobs in 2016, a figure expected to increase to 30.9 million by 2020.

The mobile sector is also making a growing contribution to public sector funding. It is forecast that the industry will contribute $500 billion in the form of general taxation in 2020, up from $450 billion last year. This does not include government revenue raised via spectrum auctions, which totalled almost $19 billion in 2016.

The report also highlights the leading role the mobile industry is playing in meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)3, particularly in areas such as financial inclusion (supporting SDG 1), health (SDG 3), gender equality (SDG 5) and infrastructure (SDG 9). Mobile networks are also pivotal in extending internet access to as much of the world’s population as possible. The number of individuals accessing the internet over mobile devices has doubled over the past five years to 3.6 billion, and will rise to 4.7 billion, equivalent to 60 per cent of the global population, by 2020.

“Mobile technology provides access to the tools and applications that address a wide range of socioeconomic challenges as well as enabling new technologies and innovations to build more efficient and environmentally sustainable societies,” added Granryd. “The GSMA and its members are united in working to achieve the SDGs across the world, leveraging the power of mobile networks to accelerate this journey in a way that no other technology can.”

New global survey results show: 2 out of 3 patients said they were involved in the decision-making process about the most appropriate treatment in IPF

INGELHEIM, Germany-Tuesday, February 28th 2017 [ ME NewsWire ]

When agreeing on an appropriate treatment, 30% of involved patients said further discussion was not needed and they preferred to strictly follow their doctor or nurse’s recommendation1
Every third IPF patient interviewed said they were not involved, losing the opportunity to share individual needs and priorities1
Survey shows patients and physicians are aligned on maintaining lung function for as long as possible being one of the key treatment priorities1,2

“It was hard for me to deal with the trauma of being diagnosed with this devastating rare disease and to make decisions, but speaking openly with my doctor about my IPF was an important step to finding the appropriate treatment to help me live with my condition.”

– Stephen Jones, 68, IPF patient

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- New results from a global survey of over 150 people living with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a life-threatening rare lung disease, demonstrate that while many patients were involved in treatment decisions, opportunities exist to improve the level of dialogue between patients and healthcare professionals.

The new findings from the survey, supported by Boehringer Ingelheim, are released to coincide with Rare Disease Day whose theme in 2017 is ‘research’. Encouragingly, the results show that 2 out of 3 patients (64%) were involved in the decision-making process for their IPF treatment.1 However, one out of every three patients (30%) said they were not involved in treatment discussions at all.1

"It is vital that IPF patients are actively involved in the treatment decisions that affect them,” said Liam Galvin, Secretary of the European Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis & Related Disorders Federation (EU-IPFF). “Open discussion about the lifestyle needs and priorities of patients is key to making the right choice of therapy that can slow the progression of IPF and other options that could assist with its symptoms and management.”

Patient and physician priorities

The new findings expand on insights from a 2015 global survey of over 400 pulmonologists. Analysis of the results shows that whilst patients and physicians agreed on one of the key treatment priorities – to maintain lung function for as long as possible – patient and physician views on other priorities regarding IPF treatment differed.1,2

In addition to maintaining lung function, patients identified reducing the risk of the condition suddenly worsening and being on a medication with manageable side-effects among their top priorities for IPF treatment.1,2 However, physicians cited being on a treatment that allows patients to continue day-to-day activities as normally as possible and being on an effective treatment independent of the stage of disease as their view of patients’ top priorities for IPF treatment besides maintaining lung function for as long as possible.2 This variation in what is seen as most important by patients and physicians highlights the benefit of open dialogue to compare these potentially competing priorities.

Patient involvement in decision-making process

The new survey findings also highlight that as many as 1 in every 3 patients involved in the decision-making process (30%) said that in coming to an agreement about appropriate medical treatment for their IPF, further discussion about treatment choice was not really needed and they strictly followed their doctor or nurse’s treatment recommendation.1

Furthermore, only 40% of those involved said that they were “actively” involved in the decision making-process before agreeing to a certain treatment.1

"IPF can make a patient feel their world has turned upside-down, and they may want to leave treatment decisions to their doctor,” said Dr. Marlies Wijsenbeek, pulmonologist, Erasmus MC, The Netherlands. “It is important that patients engage in discussion. This provides their doctor with relevant information so that the right decision is made at the right time on the appropriate treatment option that best suits their needs. This applies both for medication as well as other non-medical support that may be of benefit.”

Boehringer Ingelheim in fibrosing lung conditions

The global survey of 152 patients was designed to provide insights into IPF and the realities of living with the condition. These new findings have been released to support the 2017 Rare Disease Day theme of ‘research’. As a leader in medical research, Boehringer Ingelheim is committed to transforming fibrosing lung diseases from fatal diseases to chronic, treatable ones. As part of this commitment, Boehringer Ingelheim is currently enrolling patients to participate in the SENSCIS™ study – (Safety and Efficacy of Nintedanib in Systemic SClerosIS), which is the largest trial to date in people with systemic sclerosis who have also developed interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD).

Actility Brings Roaming to LoRaWan Network Operators with Pre-Release Implementation of LoRa Alliance Draft Standard

BARCELONA, Spain-Tuesday, February 28th 2017 [ ME NewsWire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Mobile World Congress: Actility and Sagemcom, pioneering industry leaders in Low Power Wide Area network software, today announce the availability of roaming between LoRaWAN networks, based on early implementation of the draft standard proposed by the LoRa Alliance™, which will be rolled out widely by operators over the coming months. This roaming capability will be demonstrated on Actility’s booth at MWC (8.0C3). Thanks to these features, operators will be able to enhance coverage within countries by network sharing, and enable international use cases for customers by roaming across borders. LoRaWAN private network owners will also be able to share their network coverage with public network operators.

“The Standardisation team working on roaming at the LoRa Alliance has done a fantastic job in specifying all the needed elements, from provisioning to key management and “back office” functions, to enable roaming between LoRaWAN networks,” explains Actility founder & CTO Olivier Hersent. “We have seen a very strong pull from communication service provider customers, so Actility has invested very heavily to bring an early implementation of the latest stable draft specification to market and gain practical experience as soon as possible, as you can see in our demonstration. Our implementation enables network sharing and roaming between LoRaWAN networks using ThingPark Wireless IoT core network platform, and networks equipped with SagemCom and other standard compliant network servers.”

“By implementing roaming features in their solutions accordingly with LoRa Alliance requirements, Sagemcom and their partners are speeding up the adoption of IoT by extending the coverage, the mobility and the cooperation between the operators. It also emphasizes the power of the Alliance by demonstrating the partnership and the interoperability between the different members and their solutions” says Eric Rieul, Sagemcom Energy & Telecom CEO.

“Roaming is essential for Objenious customers to fully benefit from LPWA network capabilities across all their locations and business internationally and globally, and we’re very pleased to see this early implementation which now contributes to enable LoRaWAN roaming”, says Stephane Allaire, Objenious CEO.

“Inmarsat enables connectivity around the world, serving customers in remote areas, as well as industries which drive the global economy. We have recently extended the capabilities of our network to make LoRaWAN connectivity available from any ground station, and we are now able to offer low-power WAN connectivity anywhere. With the help of this new LoRa Alliance roaming standard, we will bring seamless ultra-low-power connectivity to a new range of mobile use cases worldwide,” comments Paul Gudonis, President, Inmarsat Enterprise.

“Orange solutions based on LoRa® will be extended worldwide in July 2017, providing focused coverage to cities, harbours or industrial sites. LoRaWAN® standardised roaming is a key complementary pillar of our strategy, to optimise deployment costs and reliability for our business customers. Orange already provides a LoRa® based end-to-end solution in France supporting more than 60 Live B2B projects in numerous verticals such as smart cities, smart building, parking, smart home, industry, supply chain, tracking, agriculture.”, says Olivier Ondet, IoT & Analytics SVP, Orange Business Services.

“LPWA is a core technology for the future of industry globally, and the dynamic manufacturing base which drives the Taiwanese economy is already turning to the IoT to optimise supply chain and logistics. The early availability of roaming, as demonstrated by Actility at MWC, and the global technology platform they now provide, is key to extending our solutions worldwide as quickly as possible,” explains Asia-Pacific Telecom President Tim Chen.

Jasper Snijder, KPN’s EVP New Business adds, “The Internet of Things doesn’t stop at national borders. For many use cases, for instance asset tracking, it is important for our customers that ‘things’ remain connected across the globe. As the first operator in the world with a LoRaWAN network covering the entire country, we are soon going to be able to offer our customers multi-national LPWAN connectivity and coverage.

“We think that roaming is a key capability for LoRaWAN, which will support many interesting use cases for our customers. We are seeing strong market demand for roaming capabilities, and are backing the Lora Alliance roaming standard. We’re pleased to see companies like Actility offering early implementations of that draft standard, which means that our customers will be able to start implementing those use cases today,” adds Lars Petermann, Head of Smart Solution for IoT at telent GmbH.

“Thanks to roaming we will be able to offer a seamless cross-border experience, which will unlock a huge potential in the market,” says Frederic Lhostte, Proximus Head of Advanced Telco Services. “It enables us to exploit new use cases, in the mobility sector as well as allow us to advance talks with companies that have business activities in a variety of countries. In addition, it will boost a closer relationship between operators in different countries that back LoRaWAN to jointly target international customers.”

Roaming offers extended coverage for specific use cases by leveraging collaboration between multiple networks, and provides increased capacity and extended device battery life in areas where there are overlapping multiple networks, and finally, it enables LoRaWAN Service Providers to better manage capacity and optimise their coverage. Roaming also enables devices to connect to different LPWA networks depending on the local coverage, and enables use cases in which assets need to be monitored and tracked as they move between countries, for example in baggage monitoring or parcel/shipment tracking.

NTT Communications Expands Its DDoS Protection Services

Global IP Network Customers Can Choose the Level of Mitigation Support that Best Fits their Cyber Security Strategy

NEW YORK-Tuesday, February 28th 2017 [ ME NewsWire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the global data and IP services arm of Fortune Global 500 telecom leader NTT (NYSE: NTT), announced that it is expanding its Distributed Denial of Service Protection Services (DPS). The expanded suite of services will enable its Global IP Network customers around the world to easily customize the level of service and assistance that best fits their needs.

DDoS attacks can strike at any time, potentially crippling network infrastructure and severely degrading the performance and reachability of a website or other IP-accessible system. Depending upon the type and severity of an attack, the impact can result in significant losses in revenue and damaged assets and, most importantly, in unpleasant experiences for end users.

“Recognizing the continuously increasing size and complexity of DDoS attacks, NTT Com is expanding the mitigation options available to its Global IP Network customers,” said Brian Foust, Vice President of Customer Engineering at NTT America. “We are giving customers the opportunity to choose the tier of support they need based on their own cyber defense strategies and plans.”

The first option, DPS Control, is an entry-level tier of service that provides support on access control lists (ACL) and is intended for customers that don’t require full mitigation assistance. Using the service, a customer can define permanent ACLs which are deployed on its NTT Com interface(s) to block a network from certain types of traffic as defined by the customer.

The second option, DPS Core, is an advanced tier of service for customers that require full DDoS mitigation support. DPS Core is supported by NTT Com’s Network Security Team, the same expert team responsible for keeping the company’s tier-1 Global IP Network (AS 2914) infrastructure safe and secure.

NTT Com has globally deployed best-of-breed infrastructure with robust DDoS mitigation capabilities and sufficient capacity to combat large-scale attacks. When notified of a possible DDoS attack, the Network Security Team analyzes network data to confirm an attack is underway and then applies various countermeasures including the redirection of all traffic destined for the DDoS target through NTT Com’s mitigation platform for scrubbing.

Subscribers to DPS Core also enjoy exclusive use of the company’s DPS Portal, a platform where customers can request mitigations and configuration changes, and review past mitigation reports.

Asiacell, Deutsche Telekom, Turkcell, Vodafone and Zain Named as Joint Recipients of 2017 GSMA Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Mobile Industry

Five Operator Groups Recognised for Exceptional Efforts in Supporting Syrian Refugees

BARCELONA, Spain -Monday, February 27th 2017 [ ME NewsWire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- At Mobile World Congress today, the GSMA announced that Asiacell, Deutsche Telekom, Turkcell, Vodafone and Zain are the winners of the GSMA’s “Outstanding Contribution to the Mobile Industry Award” for 2017. The joint honorees were recognised for their work in supporting millions of Syrian refugees who have been displaced by the conflict in their home country. The award was presented to the five operators at a special ceremony held last evening.

“On behalf of the GSMA, I congratulate Asiacell, Deutsche Telekom, Turkcell, Vodafone and Zain, and thank them for their inspirational efforts in supporting refugees fleeing the tragic Syrian conflict,” said Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman, GSMA and Founder and Chairman, Bharti Enterprises. “In coordination with many international NGOs, relief agencies, partners and suppliers, they have worked tirelessly to provide a diverse array of critical communications initiatives, extending lifelines to millions of people who otherwise would have nowhere to turn for help.”

It is estimated that 11 million Syrians have fled their homes since the civil war began in 2011. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, estimates that nearly 3 million people fled to Turkey, 1 million to Lebanon, 240,000 to Iraq, 650,000 to Jordan and some 1 million to Germany, with many more displaced across Europe and beyond.

From the countries on Syria’s borders – Turkey, Iraq and Jordan – to further afield in Germany, Greece, Macedonia and Serbia – the five operators have undertaken a range of initiatives to support the Syrian refugees, including:

    The establishment of dedicated call centres providing legal assistance, human rights guidance, community advice and emergency response;
    The deployment of infrastructure, including instant networks, to enable connectivity in the refugee camps in Greece, Iraq, Jordan, Macedonia and Serbia, and the introduction of mobile broadband in some of the larger camps;
    The development of customised apps for services such as education, locating and reuniting families, and text and audio translation services;
    The provision of toll-free services, SIM cards, short codes and devices;
The creation of online resources for contacts and work to help Syrian refugees settle in their new homes; and
Start-up and entrepreneurial competitions to develop innovative solutions, such as mobile money services for financial inclusion.

“Humanitarian crises are only increasing in their complexity and consequence, and as a global community, we must come together to address suffering – whether from natural or human cause – and this must be a dedicated and united effort,” continued Mittal. “The collective response of the five organisations recognised today tells a remarkable story of the difference that our industry can make when the world is faced with an overwhelming disaster.”

The most prestigious accolade in the GSMA’s annual Global Mobile (Glomo) Awards, the “Outstanding Contribution to the Mobile Industry Award” recognises outstanding achievement in the mobile industry. The Award honours personal or company contributions, as well as achievements that span entire organisations, over a sustained period of time, or for technology advancements that have helped, and are helping, to shape the mobile sector as we know it today. Frontier Communications Joins Milestone Ultra HD Trials with SES

Frontier to test 4K Ultra HD content on SES platform aimed at accelerating Ultra HD delivery to homes across the U.S.

LUXEMBOURG -Monday, February 27th 2017 [ ME NewsWire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- SES S.A. (Euronext Paris:SESG) (LuxX:SESG) today announced Frontier Communications Corporation has begun testing 4K Ultra HD content delivery using SES’s fully-managed Ultra HD distribution platform.

Frontier is the latest multichannel video programming distributor (MVPD) to join SES’s milestone trials aimed at accelerating Ultra HD delivery to homes across North America. SES has a growing number of cable and television system operators currently evaluating the satellite-based Ultra HD solution in an effort to provide the Ultra HD programming to their subscribers this year.

SES’s managed Ultra HD platform is delivered over dedicated satellite bandwidth, which provides a much higher quality viewer experience compared to current Internet-delivered 4K offerings susceptible to bottlenecks, buffering and network congestion. Currently home to nine linear Ultra HD channels, the platform provides the largest bundle of Ultra HD programming in North America.

“We are optimistic that SES’s innovative, pre-packaged Ultra HD solution will allow for a smooth transition of Ultra HD delivery to Frontier subscriber homes nationwide,” said Steve Ward, SVP of Video Technology & Content for Frontier Communications.

“MVPDs across the country have been extremely impressed with our Ultra HD channel lineup and how satellite is enabling them to leap frog to the latest transmission technologies in order to accelerate the delivery of Ultra HD to their subscriber homes,” explained Steve Corda, Vice President of Business Development for SES in North America.

BARCELONA -Monday, February 27th 2017 [ ME NewsWire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE): Lenovo today announced an ecosystem of devices and services that support the new era of mobility and represent how today’s users are demanding solutions that bridge connectivity, hardware and user-centric design. Lenovo is introducing a new device portfolio at Mobile World Congress 2017 that spans nearly all mobile form factors for the ultimate in choice with: the detachable Miix 320, blending affordability with connectivity on-the-go – two convertibles, mobile powerhouses Yoga 720 and 520 – four tablets, the versatile Tab 4 family built for everyone in the family – and Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus, smartphones that pair premium features with affordable prices. All these devices share the ability to give users true mobility, such as the powerful option of LTE* for near-ubiquitous connectivity. At the same time, Lenovo is announcing an enhancement to Lenovo Connect with support for reprogrammable e-SIMs, which on select Windows LTE enabled devices, will allow customers to take advantage of their local Telco contract for data when at home and the best local wireless pricing when they are roaming, without having to swap out their SIM.

Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus: Captivating Design, Unlimited Performance.

The Moto G heritage is one of premium features without a premium price tag, and the all-new Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus remain true to this legacy, delivering what people want most without a premium price tag.

The newest members of the Moto G family bring together an unexpected combination of beauty and power. Both devices feature precision crafted metal design – a first for Moto G - and powerful octa-core processors that enable exceptional performance. Long lasting, all-day batteries mean less plugging in and more getting done, fingerprint readers keep user information safe and secure and advanced camera capabilities allow for the capture of stunning photos with faster focus. Unexpected is now extraordinary.

Lenovo Tab 4 Series Tablets for Kids and the Family

The Lenovo Tab 4 tablet family builds on the foundation of its mainstream tablets by making them even better: delivering four beautifully designed, powerfully built devices crafted for every member of the family. High on the multimedia experience, the Lenovo Tab 4 8 and Lenovo Tab 4 10 models have dual speakers and Dolby Atmos®. The Lenovo Tab 4 family also introduces an all-new premium line for media buffs: the Lenovo Tab 4 8 Plus and Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus, sporting a standout dual-glass design with full HD displays, powerful processors and up to 12 hours of battery life.

We take the tablet concept ever further with optional packs that transform the Lenovo Tab 4 series into dedicated kid’s tablets or productivity tablets. The Kid’s Pack comes with a shock-resistant bumper, a blue-light filter and a pair of colorful, scratch resistant 3M stickers, augmented by an optimized kid’s experience from the Lenovo Kid’s Account, which features up-to-date and curated kid’s content, a browser with whitelisted websites and scheduling tools for parents. The tablets can also transform into a 2-in-1 Android workhorse with the addition of the optional Productivity Pack with Bluetooth keyboard, which complements the experience of the Lenovo Tab 4’s productivity interface. This interface incorporates a taskbar for quick switching between apps, multi-window support, support for common keyboard shortcuts, and optimization for mouse and keyboard operations. (Read more about the Lenovo Tab 4 Series here.)

Miix 320 Detachable with Lightning-Fast LTE Option*

The Miix 320 combines the productivity of Windows 10 with full keyboard in a lightweight, affordable detachable. Keeping Connected Anywhere with Lenovo Connect e-SIM

Lenovo Connect e-SIM enhancement makes it easy to connect anywhere in the world – no more swapping out SIM cards. Users can even share the same plan across devices when those devices are enabled with Lenovo Connect.

P Series Debuts in New Colors and Leica Style Portraiture

BARCELONA, Spain-Monday, February 27th 2017 [ ME NewsWire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- To kick off Mobile World Congress 2017, Huawei Consumer Business Group today launched the HUAWEI P10 and HUAWEI P10 Plus. The much-anticipated devices are a combination of beautiful hardware and the latest advances in software, showcasing striking colors and finishes and introducing new Leica front and back cameras with cutting-edge portrait features to make every shot a cover shot.

Additionally, Huawei unveiled its second-edition smartwatch, the HUAWEI WATCH 2 and Porsche Design HUAWEI Smartwatch. The 4G sports wearable combines innovative technology with authentic craftsmanship, and features an athletic and stylish lightweight design.

“As culture and technology continue to intersect in every aspect of our world, we want to deliver new products and experiences that ultimately improve and enhance life,” said Richard Yu, CEO, Huawei Consumer Business Group. “Our impressive new HUAWEI P10 and HUAWEI P10 Plus weave together the exceptional imaging capabilities of Leica and our stand-out design and hardware innovations.”

Key features include:

    Leica Dual-Camera 2.0 for the HUAWEI P10 and Leica Dual-Camera 2.0 Pro Edition for the HUAWEI P10 Plus, with precise 3D facial detection, dynamic illumination, portrait enhancements, natural bokeh effect and HUAWEI Hybrid Zoom as well as the world’s first Leica front camera;
    Trendy colors and design, including the industry’s first Hyper Diamond-Cut finishing and color variants created in partnership with Pantone;
Kirin 960 processor, HUAWEI Ultra Memory and new EMUI 5.1.

An Artistic Photography Studio in Your Hands

The HUAWEI P10’s new Leica Dual-Camera 2.0 and Huawei P10 Plus’ Leica Dual-Camera 2.0 Pro Edition, with a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor, a 12-megapixel RGB sensor and 8-megapixel Leica front camera deliver superior technical and artistic photography features.

The devices’ portrait features include precise 3D facial detection technology, dynamic illumination and portrait enhancements. A smart imaging algorithm applies studio-like re-lighting and beautifying effects to create radiant portraits. Using the new depth-of-field algorithm, a natural bokeh effect creates sharper, clearer and more vivid colors in the foreground, while the background remains elegantly blurred.

The HUAWEI P10 Plus’ Leica Dual-Camera 2.0 Pro Edition includes new SUMMILUX-H Leica lenses with a larger F/1.8 aperture and higher optical capability. Co-developed with GoPro, the HUAWEI P10 and HUAWEI P10 Plus also feature Highlights, a mobile editing tool which creates a dynamic video of users’ images and videos.

Iconic P Series Design with On-trend Touches

The HUAWEI P10 introduces the industry’s first Hyper Diamond-Cut finishing on a smartphone, along with refined sandblast and high gloss finishes. The HUAWEI P10 and HUAWEI P10 Plus are also available in a selection of unique colors as a result of the first cross-industry partnership with the Pantone Color Institute, including Dazzling Blue and the Pantone Color of the Year 2017, Greenery.

The Hyper Diamond-Cut finish will be available in Dazzling Blue and Dazzling Gold. Greenery, Rose Gold, Mystic Silver, Graphite Black and Prestige Gold will be available with a sandblast finish, and Ceramic White will be available in high gloss.

Both its 5.1-inch and 5.5-inch models feature the latest Corning Gorilla 5 Glass protection and narrow bezel edges, while the HUAWEI P10 Plus has a 2K display for more details. The P Series’ signature camera window is flush with the back of the device.

The HUAWEI P10 and HUAWEI P10 Plus’ fingerprint sensor is now on the front of the phone and lies under one continuous pane of glass; the fingerprint sensor also replaces the navigation bar making the screen view bigger.

Exceptional Performance Advancements

These new smartphones take efficiency a step further with the powerful Kirin 960 processor and all-new EMUI 5.1.

Layered on top of the machine learning algorithm is HUAWEI Ultra Memory. First, the machine learning algorithm learns how users use their phones. Then, HUAWEI Ultra Memory anticipates app usage and manages RAM, so the most-used apps and services load faster and outperform in multitasking. EMUI 5.1 also improves touch response with a faster touch control driver, predictive touch tracking and parallel graphics rendering.

With 3,200 and 3,750 mAh batteries, the devices support HUAWEI SuperCharge technology. The low voltage, low temperature fast charging solution comes with a super safe 5-gate protection mechanism, offering real-time voltage, current and temperature monitoring to make charging fast and safe.

The HUAWEI P10 Plus features 4x4 MIMO (four physical antennas) with support for the 4.5G network. Both devices feature 2X2 Wi-Fi MIMO (two antennas) for fast Wi-Fi speed coverage. For users requiring faster, more accurate navigation via maps and applications, HUAWEI HiGeo technology combines multi-sensory predictive tracking and offline big data to enable GPS and cell network location detection.

U-CAN Creates Heartwarming Video Depicting Cats Using U-CAN Correspondence Course Materials

Heartwarming video of an elderly widow living alone deep in the mountains with her two cats

TOKYO-Monday, February 27th 2017 [ ME NewsWire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- U-CAN releases an online fictional video entitled “Cats Learning” for view over YouTube that depicts an elderly widow and her two cats living deep in the forest of Nagano Prefecture. The video is designed to demonstrate the highly effective correspondence course materials created by U-CAN while at the same time touching the hearts of viewers with a warm storyline.

Please watch the video at: https://youtu.be/R4c_jyTH1a4

The video depicts the two cats observing the widow in deep sorrow looking at her husband’s picture and then suddenly picking up and begin studying a fictional "U-nyan" (Meaning “U-Meow”) correspondence course for cats. “U-Meow” includes text and DVD materials in cat paw language designed to teach them how to “stand on their hind legs”, “shake their tails”, and “give massages”. This scene raises the question why the cats are studying the “U-Meow” correspondence course materials?

This question is answered when the cats take a surprising and heartwarming behavior when they see once again the old lady crying with her husband’s picture in her hands. Do watch the moving story of the elderly widow and her two cats online.

“The true value of correspondence courses is their ability to provide people with new knowledge and skills by enabling them to study at their convenience wherever and whenever they like,” said Kentaro Kimura, Executive Creative Director at Hakuhodo Kettle. “Based upon this strength of U-CAN’s correspondence course business, we came up with the story line of a lonely elderly widow living in the remote mountainous region of Japan with her cats to demonstrate the ability of U-CAN’s correspondence course to help cheer up the old lady saddened by the loss of her husband.”
