ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Monday, April 13th 2015 [ME NewsWire]
The Abu Dhabi Civil Defense General Directorate called upon the public to adhere to the regulations of installing fire prevention equipment in homes and to adhere to all of the safety procedures in place for the prevention of fires during the summer.
Captain Majid Abdullah Al Tamimi, Chief of the Media and Public Relations Section in Abu Dhabi Civil Defense General Directorate, stressed the importance of ensuring that all electric switches and wiring are of good quality and efficiency. He also advised the public to avoid using faulty electrical materials that are used for connecting the power to electrical appliances such as refrigerators, water heaters, air conditioners, and exhaust fans. He also pointed out the importance of ensuring that houses are equipped with fire extinguishers for emergencies, and to be consistent in checking and maintaining the validity of the extinguisher.
“When compared with the previous years, there has been a considerable decrease in the amount of house fires both in general and on the level of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi,” he said. “This could be attributed to the extensive awareness programs and safety precautions that the Civil Defense General Directorate organizes.”
He also noted that most of the fires caused by car accidents result from the negligence of the owner and their failure to provide a fire extinguisher inside the vehicle. Captain Al Tamimi explained that there are many factors that could lead to a vehicular fire: “During the summer, the high temperatures can cause the engine to become overheated and ignite. Other cases of fire have involved situations where fuel drops onto hot surfaces, such as the exhaust, causing a fire to erupt.” He encouraged drivers to regularly service their vehicles, to equip them with fire extinguishers that meet the approved specifications, to check the level and quality of vehicle oils, to refill water levels, and to prevent any leakage of fuel and oil.
These recommendations fall within the framework of the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense General Directorate and their commitment to raise public awareness regarding the essential safety and prevention requirements.
