Abu Dhabi Traffic Implements Emergency Plan and Diverts Traffic to Alternative Roads

Twenty three people sustained minor injuries in four separate accidents involving a total of 96 vehicles on the Abu Dhabi – Al Ain road on Saturday morning due to low horizontal visibility during thick fog.
Brigadier Khalifa Mohammed Al Khaiaili, Deputy Director of the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate, who supervised the incident on the ground, said: “As soon as we received notification about the accident from the Operations Room, the directorate issued its directives to implement several field and preventive measures to prevent further accidents as a result of low horizontal visibility. Traffic was diverted from Al Sad towards Suwaihan and traffic flow was supervised on the Al Sad- Suwaihan road and Busamra Bridge – Al Ain road, until the remnants of the damaged vehicles were removed off the crash site”.
Additionally, Brigadier Al Khaiaili pointed out that the the emergency plan during foggy conditions was implemented, in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Directorate, the Civil Defense Vehicles, the ambulance and rescue vehicles of the Emergency and Safety Department and the Security Media patrols. “Paramedics transferred the injured to Tawam hospital and the damaged vehicles were removed off the crash site. Moreover, the Traffic Patrols supervised by Lt. Colonel Salah Al Hemairi, Chief of Al Ain Highways Section, supervised traffic flow and the accident reconstruction operation.
According to Brigadier Al Khaiaili, the first incident involved 5 vehicles and took place on Al Sad -Suwaihan bridge roundabout. The second and bigger accident involved 69 cars and occurred on the Al Sad-Suwaihan Bridge towards Abu Dhabi. “The third accident involved 8 cars and occurred on the Al Sad -Suwaihan Bridge towards Al Ain, while the fourth accident, which involved 14 cars, took place on the Busamra-Al Ain road,” he added. Furthermore, he noted that all injured were transferred to Tawam Hospital to receive the necessary medical treatment. 18 have already left the hospital, while five are still receiving treatment. “Investigations are still underway to determine the circumstances of the accident,” Brigadier Al Khaiaili indicated.
Brigadier Al Khaiaili praised the efforts of the various entities that rushed to the accident scene to provide traffic safety. He also commended their efficiency in discharging their duties based on the experience that they have gained while managing major and serious traffic accidents.
Brigadier Al Khaiaili called upon motorists to adhere to driving instructions during fog, to be cautious, reduce speed, and adhere to the safety distance between vehicles to avoid accidents. He pointed to the importance of complying with the continuous calls from the Abu Dhabi Police to exercise caution, drive at low speeds, and stop on the right shoulder of the road if visibility was too low.
He also urged them to pay attention to weather changes expected over the next few days in the UAE, which may include fog and heavy rains, or other weather changes.
In conclusion, Brigadier Al Khaiaili reiterated the warning issued to motorists by the concerned authorities on the need to leave sufficient safe distance between vehicles, avoid overtaking, gradually reduce speeds of vehicles during fog, and continue to drive carefully with a speed suitable for the surrounding conditions. He also warned motorists against using hazard lights while driving. He called upon them to make the right decision to avoid traffic accidents caused by low visibility by parking their vehicle off the road and to take precautionary methods to ensure their safety.
